; The Dorking Halls was built to house the Festival and opened in 1931; 'Song for a Spring Festival', written by RVW to celebrate the Festival's 50th year, may only be performed at the Festival; RVW retired as Festival Conductor in 1953, but continued to conduct the St Matthew Passion until 1958; Whilst living in Dorking, RVW composed works including Serenade to Music, Symphonies 4 - 7 and The Pilgrim's Progress; RVW conducted the first combined choirs concert at the Festival on 10 May 1905; The first competition day at the Festival exclusively for children was held in 1921; In 1934 the BBC broadcast part of the Festival performance of Dream of Gerontius; The first Festival performance of the St Matthew Passion in 1931 had 800 singers;

News from first rehearsals of 2016

To all our Singers!

Many thanks to everyone who helped make our first rehearsals for the St John Passion and Combined Rehearsals for the Festival competitions and concerts such a success by singing, helping and contributing. We hope you enjoyed our first combined rehearsals at the Dorking Halls.

Apologies for absence were received and are appreciated.  Please note the Combined Rehearsal dates for 2017 as follows and make sure you put them in your diary: January 16th, February 25th and March 25th. Jonathan looks forward to seeing you then!

The St John Passion rehearsal was very well attended and taken by Brian this time (with Ben Costello, our Chorus Master, also there).  The list for singers will close at this weekend's rehearsal on Sunday 17th January.

Vacancies exist in our Administrative team:

  • someone to take over from Flicky Woods as Div 2 Librarian
  • someone to take over from Chris Wallace (who has moved away) in looking after our banners and trophies (N.B. please return banners and trophies at the next Combined Rehearsals on 27th February)
  • we also need a new Publicity Manager and a Webmaster as Jo Forrest and Chris Westbey are stepping down after the April Festival
